Housing Case Studies

Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) of the C3 Sub-region in the West-Midlands.

ECOTEC carried out a Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) of the C3 Sub-region in the West-Midlands. The C3 area consists of 7 local authorities - Cannock Chase, Dudley, Sandwell, South Staffordshire, Telford & Wrekin, Walsall and Wolverhampton. In accordance with government guidance this SHMA provided a robust evidence base in order to measure housing supply and demand within the area, define characteristics of local housing markets, explore key drivers and forecast future trajectories. Specifically the assessment provided estimations of housing need and demand in terms of affordable and market housing, and detailed how the distribution of need and demand varies across the sub-region. It also considered future demographic trends and identified the accommodation requirements of specific groups such as first time buyers, key workers, older people, homeless households and Black and Minority Ethnic groups.

Housing Transitions of Young People

This innovative study commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) sought to understand the different factors that impacted on young people's housing paths,  as they moved into independence.  A combination of regionally-based deliberative events, a web-based blog,  and stakeholder interviews built up a picture of how different groups of young people – care-leavers and homeless people, students and young workers – sorted out their housing futures.  The results of the work were summarised in a full report and 'Findings' bulletin produced by the JRF,  and were used to develop the JRF's research programme on housing and young people's issues.
