A Study of Building Preservation Trusts in Scotland

Building Preservation Trusts (BPTs) are charitable organisations whose fundamental aim is the preservation and regeneration of historic buildings.

ECOTEC recently prepared a report for Historic Scotland, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Architectural Heritage Fund, which independently reviewed the BPT movement in Scotland.

ECOTEC concluded that Scottish BPTs should be continued to be supported as a mechanism for restoring historic buildings and proposed a number of recommendations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the movement.  The recommendations focused on raising the profile of the BPT movement; developing capacity; prioritizing buildings at risk; improving funding processes; addressing funding gaps; and ensuring the financial sustainability of BPTs.
