On 7th-8th June 2017, Ecorys exhibited the Economic Empowerment of the Poorest Programme/ Stimulating Household Improvements Resulting in Economic Empowerment (EEP/SHIREE) at the European Development Days conference in Brussels, under the theme of “Fragility and Resilience”. This was the first time Ecorys has exhibited a project at this event.
EEP/Shiree was a Challenge Fund, which funded a variety of projects that enabled over one million poor Bangladeshis (including ethnic minorities and marginalised groups such as female-headed, elderly, and disabled households) to lift themselves out of extreme poverty through a suite of targeted interventions. It produced high-quality research into the dynamics of extreme poverty and aimed to improve the way in which Government, donors, NGOs and the public, approaches extreme poverty.
Ecorys used the stand to share the lessons learnt from EEP/Shiree with a wider community of practice, to meet and network with other organisations, and to demonstrate our capabilities in sustainable livelihoods programme management. The stand included beneficiary perceptions on factors affecting their progress out of poverty, interactive presentations on factors key to building resilience, and copies of publications funded by EEP/Shiree. Additionally, there were opportunities for discussion with Ecorys colleagues involved in programme delivery; we were particularly pleased to welcome Dr. Zulfiqar Ali, the former Head of Research and Advocacy at EEP/Shiree and current Director of Research at BRAC International in our exhibition team. Donors, practitioners, researchers, and other visitors visited us on both days; the 2006 Nobel Laureate Dr. Mohammed Yunus and EDD 2017 panellist also dropped in for a photo with the exhibition team.
EEP/Shiree was funded by DFID, SDC, and the Government of Bangladesh from 2008, until its closure in 2016. Ecorys, led the management consortium in partnership with the British Council, the Centre for Development Studies at the University of Bath, PMTC Bangladesh, and Unnayan Shammanay.
